Butterfly undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa and adult in its life cycle. The forms vary in the four stages. Let’s take a look at the growth of Common Mormon!
First Stage | Egg
Eggs are mostly in round, bullet or disk shape. A female butterfly can lay one or up to dozens of eggs. They can be laid individually or laid in a mass. Within a few days to a few weeks, the eggs will hatch into caterpillars.
Fourth Stage | Adult
After mating, the female butterfly will find a suitable host plant to lay eggs.
Second Stage | Larva
Caterpillars eat their own egg shell and the surrounding leaves. They will molt and grow. After the last skin is shed, the pupae are formed.
Third Stage | Pupa
The adult’s body gradually thickens until it finally emerges from the pupa. The process is called eclosion.
